Honest people are continually surprised by unexpected sen- sation and movement, and have learned not to mind that so much. The time comes when the feeling of insecurity be- comes less than a dreaded occurrence. It becomes a most precious and valued form of excitement, a way of experienc- ing being alive in a heightened way, a way of getting high. Most of us never overcome the butchering of our upbringing enough to discover how to tolerate the experience of free- dom and learn to relish having it.
Words Are Labels for Pictures, and None of Them Are Real About a dozen times in the past fifteen years, I have
gone to Greece, to the Island of Patmos, which I particularly love. Every time I go back, I strike out walking across the hills, looking at the sea and the other islands in the distance and the blue sky, saying over and over to myself in my mind, "Damn, I'm glad to be back! I am back again! This is just like before. It's as beautiful as ever! This sure is beautiful!" After I walk a while, I begin to settle down, and I start talking to myself in a different way. "Those are just rocks. That is just dirt. That is just water. Those are just other islands." After some time of this, it occurs to me, "How beautiful this is!" It seems to come out of the sea and the light and the sky and the land. The word "beautiful" seems to describe an experi- ence that occurs out of being there in that moment. When I was using the word earlier, it came out of my memories, making comparisons with other times and places. It was a
