is a development beyond doctrine. Psychotherapy was in- vented to try to keep body and soul together—to help us to not mind being all the time and to not be minding all the time. In the course of growing to adult size, we all have to
learn the roles and rules. In order to do this, we forget, sub- sume, take for granted, ignore, or drop consciousness of our essential being. The path to the good life leads on further than childhood moralism, but a lot of people don't go that far. The path from doctrine to heresy is a natural growth—a natural evolution—a transition from one level of maturity to another. Very few of us stay on the path, however, because we get so damaged by those who teach us the doctrine. We become so filled with hate, and so embroiled in arguments and entangled in the webs of our minds that we stop grow- ing. With rare exceptions, up until and including the present time in history, this has been the case for all human beings.
We can no longer afford the luxury of waiting for what might naturally evolve over time: a way to not damage all the children so badly. We are in danger of damaging ourselves to death. The problem, formerly serious, has become critical. The sentimental, idealistic romanticism of deeply felt reli- gious belief, though responsible for the suffering of millions, was relatively harmless until we developed hydrogen bombs and other wo rid- threatening technology. We can no longer afford to sit around in groups together to indulge in a tearful remembering forward, of a forgotten hoped-for sense of unity, at the direction of various priests and patrolmen who would have us gear up to attack other groups doing the same thing.
